Ten Tips to Prep Your Plumbing for a Vacation
Whether it's a weekend getaway or an extended vacation, here are 10 things you can do to prep your plumbing for a vacation:
It’s time to get away, but not before preparing your home plumbing for your trip. Ensure that you return to a house that doesn't have any unexpected leaks by following this simple checklist.
Steps may vary by home, so if you have any questions be sure to consult a professional from Atlantic Plumbing Services before heading out.
1. Shut Off the Main Water Valve
Before leaving your house for a long period of time, shut off the main water supply valve. This will prevent any leaks that could cause serious damage while you’re away, and it will make sure you don't waste water or money.
2. Drain Your Sprinklers
Drain hoses and sprinkler systems before leaving town for an extended period of time. If a system does leak, that could cause big increases in your water bill.
3. Adjust your water heater’s temperature settings before leaving for vacation.
Most homes don't use their water heaters when the home is vacant, so there's no need for the unit to be working 24/7.
Vacation mode on your water heater will save you money while you're away since it won't be heating any water.
4. Check Your Drains and Garbage Disposal.
Don’t let a summer clog spoil your vacation plans.
Check your drains and make sure there are no food particles stuck in the disposal or sink. In addition, wipe up any water or moisture that could cause rust, which can lead to other plumbing problems down the line.
5. Check for Leaks
Don’t forget to check for leaks when getting your home ready for vacation! If you have even the smallest leak or dripping faucet, take care of it before heading out of town. This will save you from additional water damage and a higher utility bill when you return.
6. Clear Debris from Your Gutters
Now is a good time to check your gutters for big clumps of leaves. If you’re planning a trip out of town, think about clearing them out before you go
7. Appliances
Before you leave for vacation, make sure to turn off and unplug all appliances. If your dishwasher, washer, or dryer will be sitting idle for a while, crack their doors open to help keep them fresh and dry.
8. Test your Sump Pump
A sump pump is a great investment for your home, but it will only work if you test it often. To ensure that your basement is safe from flooding, test your sump pump by pouring water into the sump pit to raise the water level. If the sump pump ejects the water well then your basement is protected.
9. Run the Pool Pump
When you’re away from home during the summer months, it’s more important than ever for your pool pump to be operating properly. Set your pool pump to the optimal run time and head out of town with confidence that you’ll come home to a clean and clear pool.
10. Ask a Neighbor to Check In
While you’re away on vacation, ask a trusted neighbor to check in on your home every once in a while if possible. Provide them with a house key and instructions so they can quickly check-in and make sure everything is okay.
